Plant Life Cycles

Follow a seed as it grows and makes new seeds.

Plant Life Cycles follows one bean from seed to seed. Students see the tiny plant inside a seed, watch it sprout and grow, and follow its flowers to pods full of new seeds that start the next generation.

Next generation A parent bean makes seeds; a separate offspring plant grows from one seed. The parent does not reset into its offspring. parent plantnew plant
New seeds can grow new plants.

What students investigate

The pack starts inside the seed: a young plant and stored food. A seed sprouts when conditions fit, a first root grows down, and a shoot pushes up seed leaves and then true leaves. Students see that a growing plant needs water and light.

The second half is about making new plants. A grown bean plant flowers, pollen reaches the stigma, and the flowers form pods with seeds. A new seed grows into a new plant, and the last card compares how long different flowering plants live, from annuals to perennials.

Who it is for

Plant Life Cycles is written for Grade 3 and fits a unit on life cycles alongside Animal Life Cycles. It also works well before or during a classroom bean-growing project, so students can match what they see in the cup to the cards.

Words such as germination, pollination, offspring and perennial are taught on Learn cards before any question uses them.

What students learn

10 learning ideas, one at a time. Each one is a silent animated Learn card, then Review and Mastery questions.

  1. A seed holds a tiny, living plant.
  2. A seed sprouts when conditions fit.
  3. A first root grows from a bean seed.
  4. A shoot grows leaves above the soil.
  5. Growing plants need water and light.
  6. A grown bean plant can make flowers.
  7. Pollination moves pollen onto a flower's stigma.
  8. Bean flowers can form pods with new seeds.
  9. A new seed can grow into a new plant.
  10. Flowering plants have different life spans.

Inside the pack

How it works in class

  • Learn. 10 silent whiteboard animations, one idea per card. No audio, so it works on a classroom screen or a quiet device.
  • Review. 30 practice questions with feedback. Ideas a student misses come back.
  • Mastery. 30 questions to show what each student knows on their own.
  • Certificate. A student who finishes can print a certificate or save it as a PDF. It shows first-try Review and Mastery results and the ideas that needed a retry.

Standards connections

These cards support parts of the following NGSS performance expectations. They do not replace hands-on investigations.

  • 3-LS1-1 — core ideas
  • 2-LS2-1 — core ideas
  • 2-LS2-2 — builds toward

Questions teachers ask

Does this replace growing real plants?

No. The cards build the vocabulary and the sequence; growing plants and testing water or light is still the investigation itself.

Why a bean?

A bean shows every stage clearly, from seed leaves to pods, so one plant can carry the whole life cycle.
